Potty Training Chronicles Continued

clip_art_8_toddler1.20314342917I know it has been quite some time since I last updated you on the whole potty training endeavors in our house, not that you missed them.  My last post and first post ended with the doctor proclaiming I may have to wait a few months and try again.  I was really hoping this wasn’t the case, but after trying for a few weeks we determined that the boy just wasn’t ready.  He just wasn’t able to “hold it” very long. I was so disappointed.  I was so ready for him to be potty trained, but he just physically wasn’t ready.

So, we waited.  We jumped back on the bandwagon sometime in November.  We decided to gradually get into it, meaning we didn’t go straight to underwear…we did the pull-up thing to start, with the goal no matter what to be in big boy pants on his 3rd birthday.

He was doing well.  A matter of fact the boy had no issues with using the potty for #2!  No more dirty diapers for me!  Woo Hoo!

On his 3rd birthday we moved to training pants.  I just knew that he would hate having that wet feeling and would eventually start letting us know before hand, but I was wrong.  He has no problems running around in wet pants evidently.  After doing loads of laundry, I went back to pull-ups.

He hasn’t been successful at telling us when he needs to go and we still have to sit him on it every hour to hour and a half, but things seem to be moving right along…

until recently.

We’ve taken several steps back…the boy no longer poos in the potty.  He has reverted to his old ways.  I don’t get it.  He was in pull-ups when he started using the potty.

I’m really at a lost with this whole potty training thing.  I just don’t know what to expect from him, which means I don’t know how to respond to him either.

Please tell me you’ve been in the same boat.

  1. First, let me just say I'm sorry that I've been so terrible at reading your blog. I need to update my links, but my computer's security stuff kicks me off when I try to do it. Anywho, I FEEL YOUR PAIN!! SO sorry that it's been such a struggle for you, but I can totally relate. The saying is REALLY true. They're ready when they're ready. For Aubrey that meant 3 1/2! And you know what, I don't plan on trying with Juliet until after 3. It's not worth the stress, the heartache...on either of us. Don't be so hard on yourself, or him. :( Sorry.

  2. Oh goodness, you are NOT alone! My son is 3 yrs, 3 mos & we were in the exact same boat until earlier this week.. we also used pull ups with Aidan (our son) and they seemed to just be another form of diaper to him, as he could have cared less to sit in his pee or poop all day.. so we tried training pants, and had the same reaction from him, he still sat in his messes!
We made it through Christmas with pull-ups, because I just plain got tired of dealing with it, and I decided that after the holiday I would try to go at it cold turkey.. NOTHING on our son & I would clean up any messes he made, hoping that with nothing on his butt to catch his pee or poop, he would learn better.
The first day was the hardest, constantly reminding him to go, cleaning up a few messes (just pee, thank goodness!) and fighting with him that he had to keep his pants OFF, instead of ON :)
Jump ahead a few days & Aidan was playing, looked at me & told me he had to go potty.. and he did.. in his potty!
The next day, I talked to him about pooping on his potty, moved his potty to where he plays, reminded him constantly.. and he finally pooped on his potty for the first time! We (of course) made a HUGE deal about this :)
Now, he is wearing training pants instead of a bare butt & we are working on pulling his pants off & on before he has an accident.. but there have been a few accidents along the way too.
I, like you, was about ready to throw in the towel, or find someone out of desperation that I could pay to potty train our son!
I think you have to find something that works for your child, and then they have to be ready themselves.. I knew our son was ready, he was lazy! .. sitting in his own mess was my first clue at that! :)
I'm sorry this is so long, I can relate to you, as I am still dealing with all of this, who knows if this will backfire for me as well.. if it does, I am going to have to go to therapy!!!
    Good luck! :)

  3. Thank you so much, Theresa. I'm so glad to know that others have had the same experience and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

  4. Thanks Barbie. Stress was one of the reasons we went back to pull ups. I was just less stressed when clean up was a little easier. I figure this is just as much training for me, as it is for him. I have to pray for patience every day.

  5. Thanks Gina. I read that same book, but I probably should look back at it because it has been several months since I last picked it up. Your words have been very helpful and I will try to remind myself what Chad told you. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
