Thankful Turkey Treat

This past week we were invited to a Thankful Party and we decided to surprise our friends with a little turkey treat.

Of course, I wasn’t the mastermind behind this idea.  Can you guess where I found it?  You all are so smart.  I seem to find everything on Pinterest these days.  Anyway, the original idea came from Family Fun, but I learned about it through Ducks in a Row.  It was originally designed to give to teachers.  We adapted it a bit to fit our needs. 

Instead of making just 1 cookie, we made 12! So, in the end this was more of a “mommy project” then a kiddo project.  I would have love for Lil’man to write on each of the feathers, but I didn’t think he would be able to do it for all 60 of them.  If we were just giving it to a few people I totally would have had him do the writing.  He’s own writing would have made it even more precious!

Here’s what he did to help make this terrific thankful turkey treat.

He and Daddy helped to roll out the peanut butter cookie dough.  (I cheated and bought ready-dough.)  Then while he was sleeping, my husband and I wrapped the cookies is plastic wrap and added tape to the back to make sure it stayed wrapped.  Then my husband traced the feathers for me.  Finally I cut out the feathers, wrote on them and taped them to the back of our turkeys.  (Make sure you fold the paper to cut more than one feather out at a time.)

Then my husband designed a little turkey head. When the boy woke up the next day, he finished the cookies off by taping the turkey heads on each cookie. 

I think they turned out so cute!! These would be great for anyone.  Just replace the word friend with whom ever you want to give one to – grandma, cousin, teacher, coach, etc.

Tot School- Holiday Break

Lil’man was 23 months.

 

This week we are on a “stay-cation” from Tot School.  I’m hosting Thanksgiving at my house this year and I needed the time to focus on getting prepared for it.  However, I did want to share some of the things that we did last year, as well as some great printables! 

 

Colorful Turkey: I created this after reading about the Colorful Turkey Caddy at Family Fun. The boy loved it last year and he still loves it this year.  I used a styrofoam ball cut in half for the body and then painted it brown, but you could easily replace the styrofoam with play-dough. Turkey Hats: This was one of our favorite activities last year.  It wasn’t the making of the hat, but the acting out of the story Run, Turkey, Run! This was another idea from Family Fun.  (You can see the original post here and the video re-enactment below.)

 

 

Felt Turkey: Last year I was inspired by Itty Bitty Love's Felt Turkey activity.  I had a lot of fun creating this for the boy.  Unfortunately, he didn’t do to well with it.  We just pulled it out this week and he’s got it down.  I think I’ll need to add more feathers to my collection, so we can do patterns with it.

 

 

Roll & Build- Pilgrim and Indian: This is a Roll & Build with a twist.  We turned it into a dice game.  It is made for two players. My husband created  our Indian and Pilgrim with foam and magnets, but since my husband loves me, and I love you, he turned it into a printable just for you! My husband is so good.

 

 

Shape Pilgrim: This was our very first shape creation and he loved it.  Ever since, we’ve be trying to discover or create new things with shapes.  (Read all about it here. If you check out 2 Teaching Mommies, you can download and Shape Indian too.)

 

 

Books, Books, Books: We are currently still reading our library stash of books from our Turkey themed week and our Thanksgiving themed week. I recommend all of them.

Thanksgiving Table Setting

Alright…is anyone else a little overwhelmed with holidays approaching?  Maybe it’s just me.  I mean, on top of planning for Thanksgiving, I have the boy’s birthday, which we are doing early while relatives are in town.  Seriously, who’s idea was that!! Oh, ME! 

Ok.  Breathe.  First things, first.  Thanksgiving.  Me being my planner self, who gets all into decorations and set up, has been scouring the web for ideas. 

 

Aren’t these table settings beautiful? I like the bottom one because it seems real simple and quick, but I feel I would still need to jazz it up a bit.  Of course, on a single budget income I’m going to have to keep it cheap. 

How do you set up your table?  And the big question of the day, table cloth, placemats or both? Help this mama out!

Tot School- Thanksgiving

Lil’man is 35 months.

 

This week we learned all about Pilgrims, Indians and Thanksgiving.  Below are just some of the things we did. You can see other activities from this unit by visiting Amber at The Belly of The Whale.

 

Language Arts: For our language arts we created a H for Helping.  We were so stoked when we came across the perfect image on the web.

   

We also had fun spelling Thanksgiving words, such as Pilgrims, Indians and various Thanksgiving meal items.

 

 

Math Concepts:  For math we decided to create another shape person, but this time we added a little twist by turning our person into an Indian.  We’ll be creating a shape pilgrim next week!

   

We also rolled a graph.  He loved doing this activity. We took turns rolling the die and then Lil’man added a dot sticker (labeling dots) to our graph each time we rolled.  The great thing about this activity is you don’t have to use the stickers, you can color it in, use stamps or even dot paints.

 

   

Social Studies: We read lots of books about the first Thanksgiving and some fun ones too!  We also did a few activities, which you can see at The Belly of the Whale.

Extra: This week for our family night we enjoyed watching Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving and making these yummy Pilgrim Hats.  This was a great activity that the boy could do by himself.

 

 

For Fun: My favorites this week was when Lil’man asked Daddy to sit on his lap, so he could read him a story. It was just precious!
