Valentine’s Day

This week we worked on Valentine’s activities. I don’t know about you, but I love holiday units.  Make sure and visit Amber at The Belly of The Whale to see more activities in action from our unit.

 

Language Arts: Lil’man connected capital letters to their lowercase.

He helped cupid get to his arrows.  Lil’man does pretty well with straight lines, but still struggles with wavy ones.

 

We have been stuck in doors so instead of doing our spelling activity that was planned we switched it up a bit.  We spelled Valentine words by going up and down the stairs.  I got this idea from Amber.

Math Concepts:  We took a Roll & Cover activity and made it into a game with number cards.  We worked together flipping cards and adding that many hearts to our Sweetheart box. 

He worked on counting from 1-10 and 1-20 with our Valentine Mazes. He got so excited to do this activity that he speed through it.  I had to make him go back over it because he made some mistakes on the 1-20.

Science & Fine Motor: One of our favorite activities this week was our Sweetheart Observations.  The boy had a lot of fun with this.  Although, after taste testing he thought they were salty.  So, I went ahead and put some salt on his tongue.  He quickly changed his mind and said they were sweet.

 

Lil’man worked on his fine motor skills with beading and I brought out his new scissors for the first time. 

 

 

Extra: We made our own colorful cardstock with tissue paper and vinegar.  Then we turn it into Valentines.

The boy also had a blast on our Valentine Scavenger Hunt.

Homemade Valentines

This year for Valentine’s Day I decided to use a technique that we used last year for our  St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock. We created our own unique paper with this “painting method.” All it took was a little vinegar, cardstock and various shades of pink and red tissue paper. 

Lil’man placed tissue paper on the white cardstock and then would “glue” it down using the vinegar.  It was nice and soggy. 

 

Then we set it aside to dry.  Once it was completely dried, Lil’man pulled off the tissue paper. The tissue paper left it’s color behind to create this wonderful water color or tie dye effect.  

Next, we took our colorful paper and added some special notes and stickers.

 

Lil’man was very excited about the Valentine’s he created and can’t wait to give them to some very special people.

Tot School- My Feelings

Lil’man is 38 months.

 

This week we worked on My Feelings. We didn’t get much done this week, but you can see other activities from in action from this unit by visiting Amber at The Belly of The Whale.

 

Language Arts: We had a new activity this week, Beginning Sound Puzzles.  The boy was very excited about these simple two piece puzzles and did them several times.

 

Math Concepts:  Color & Count was another new activity.  First he colored feelings faces different colors (happy-yellow, sad-blue, and mad-red) and then he counted to see how many he had of each. 

He also did a Feelings Spin & Graph.   He really enjoyed this activity as it switched up our normal Roll & Graph. 

Social Studies: The boy played some Sesame Street Feeling games online.  He is a big fan of computer games.

 

Extra: We made Emotional Pizzas and watched Ruby's Studio-The Feelings Show for our Family Night!

Special Deliveries

A few hours ago I got a knock on my door.  When I opened the door the delivery man was walking back to his truck and there was a long black rectangle box sitting on my front door step.  I quickly ran inside to open it.  Inside were beautiful roses and a box of chocolates!  So, today I am thankful for my husband spoiling me after Valentine’s Day and using his own weekly cash to get them for me! 

Thanks honey they are beautiful!

Tot School- Week of Feb 8

Lil'man is 26 months

This week in Tot School we focused on Valentine’s Day! I loved looking back at this pictures because lil’man was a boy with many expressions! They were just too cute.

Our first day of Tot School was done in warmth of space heaters. Our heater had broke down during the weekend and wouldn’t get fixed to that evening. You may noticed that Lil’man is wearing his hat indoors to keep his little head warm. As was the case for many other bloggin’ mommies, I found some great Valentine resources at Target in the $1 spot. A couple being heart foam stickers and a heart ice cube tray. We used this to do some 1:1 matching.

 

We also used them to create patterns. I would start a pattern and then he would finished it. This was the first time that I have tried patterning with him, and I was impressed by how quickly he got the hang of it.

Our last activity for the day was creating Valentines for grandparents. We had to make sure to get them done, so we could get them in the mail in time. For this activity I just cut out some hearts and Lil’man color over them, we traced his hand on the back and then he stuck some Elmo stickers on them. To help him pull the stickers off easier by himself I removed the excess sticker.

On our second day of Tot School, we pulled out some of our foam beads. I pulled out all the purple, pink and red hearts and some smaller beads for spacers. I just let Lil’man put them on any way he choose in the beginning, but then we worked together to create various patterns, such as heart, small bead, heart. 

 

Next, Lil’man made his Valentine for his daddy. I cut up some tissue paper and we glued it on to a heart made from construction paper. Since our glue bottle is so stiff, I had him apply the glue with a paint brush. This worked out really well because it help keep the coating thin. Lil’man really enjoyed using the paint brush. It is the first time I pulled one out for him.

Finally, our last activity for the week was sorting our foam hearts by color. Since the foam hearts are stickers, I went ahead and stuck one color in each dish. Lil’man struggled with the dark pink and purple at first, but with a little help he started to see a difference. (I love how I got so much use out of those hearts! I am going to be using them this week too!)
