Come A Long Way

We’ve never expected something so small to get so big.

Due to the wacky weather we couldn’t even plant our garden until the middle of May.  We had to start our tomato plants in pots.  Now look at them.  Hopefully, the heat this past week will help them to start turning red.

Not sure if they would pull through.	Now, the biggest plant is even taller then in this picture.  It is about 5’9”.

We were worried about the lack of growth in our pepper plants.  It took them forever to show any change. 

Once we got rid of the aphids they seemed to really take off.	We just picked our first pepper this weekend!

We had high hopes for our squash and zucchini plants.  They’ve lived up to it and more, even with their lack of space.  Due to all the rain this year we did loose a few due to flower rot(?), but it sure hasn’t slowed down their production!

Who would think that these little plants could get so big.	We’re enjoying eating the harvest.

Our pickling cucumbers continue to produce even though the tomato plants have taken over their section.

Love how it shoots out little vines that wrap around whatever it can grab.	We haven’t pickled any yet.  Do you have a recipe I should try?

Finally Planted

We were so excited to finally get our garden planted this month!  We planted squash, zucchini, cucumbers and yellow onions. We also planted a few different type of peppers and tomatoes.  And you should see our tomato plants now!  This picture was actually taken a week ago and our tomato plants have really filled out. 

We were so blessed to have some friends, who have gardened before, come help us plant it and give us some advice.  Evidently we brought a few too many plants for our garden…specifically our vine-y ones, the zucchini and squash.  You live, you learn.  Fortunately, we were able to return them.

I’m hoping to can some salsa, pickles and tomato sauce, but I don’t have recipes yet for those.  Let me me know if you have a good one that I could use.

Our Mud Pit

With 13.6 inches plus of rain this month, you can imagine how much time we’ve spent in our garden since our last post.  (It’s actually raining as I sit here and type.)  Currently, our garden looks like a mud pit.

We’re anxious to get into the dirt and start growing.  Before the rain came, the boy was eager to help in anyway he could.

Unfortunately, the weather just hasn’t cooperated and we haven’t be able to do too much.  We have done some planting though, although not in our garden.  You see, we received some tomato seedlings from my sister…and boy were they looking pretty sad.  I wish I would have taken a picture to show how pathetic they looked. They were all droopy and starving for a new home, but as I said…RAIN and MUD and have I mention the destructive WINDS?  It has been a crazy spring.

We finally gave into putting our tomato plants in pots.  They’re starting to perk up, but still look pretty sad.

  

We’re hoping that this weather starts to clear up soon, otherwise we may have to scratch a spring garden and just wait to plant a summer one.

Our Garden

This will be our very first year having a garden.  My sister and her family inspired us last year.  And since my husband wanted a hobby that he could do with his hands (he sits at a computer most of the day) we decided to take it on.

Now we don’t know much, so we are trying to read up all about it.  We currently are using a document we printed off the web for our specific area.  So, if you have any other recommendations, we would greatly appreciate it!

And as far as a plan…we haven’t one…yet.  What we do have is a tilled up section of land, thanks to my brother-n-law.  Now we have to figure out what we’re actually going to do with it.  The obvious things we need to think about:

What are we going to plant? Have we missed the planting window? We’re thinking tomatoes, green beans for sure.  We might try some cucumbers, lettuce and carrots.  Haven’t officially decided.

Our main concern is how are we going to keep the rabbits and the neighboring woodchucks out of it?  What do you do?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I’m sure more questions will develop as we dive deeper into this little project of ours, but for now I’m just excited that we have some where to begin!  And I have a feeling Lil’man is going to love the adventure as well.
